How to Avoid Death During Holiday Travels (Or Something Less Dramatic)

The chilly breeze, the snugness of wool, the warmth of December sunlight... The holidays are upon us, Geeks! And like most of you, I'll be packing my bags and heading home soon.

But whether you're going home or taking a trip with your loved ones, the one thing that could put a damper on your travels is your health.
Let's face it: travelling can take a toll on you, and if you have a sucky immune system as it is (I know I do, since I'm ill without having left my house at all), it's best to be safe rather than sorry.

So behold my five tips to avoid death and despair and have yourself a Merry little Christmas - I mean, holiday. Whatever you celebrate. Or don't. It's all cool.

1) Be Overprepared

When we Indians have to go somewhere abroad, we pack fifty different sweaters, just in case. You ought to do the same. Weather can be finicky, so even if you've consulted the weather wizard, pack an extra pair of sunglasses or another cardigan depending on where you're off to.
And don't forget to take your medicines! No matter where I go, I always pack some over-the-counter drugs to ward off any sudden illnesses.

2) Don't Get Lazy
Everyone tends to forget about their responsibilities when they're on holiday, but you can still be the exception. Do you usually work out four times a week? Maintain that habit on vacation. Use the hotel gym. Walk or cycle instead of taking the train. If it's too cold, have a dance party in your room. Just remember to stay active.

3) Keep Calm and Cool Down

You're in a new place. You're with incredible people. You're on an adventure. It's the holiday season! But that doesn't mean you have to be out and about all the time. Vacations are about relaxation as much as they are about excitement. If you're exhausted after a night out on the town, then stay in, drink hot chocolate and give your mind and body time to breathe.

4) Call the Doc
Even if you're away from home, you don't have to worry about seeking treatment. In this day and age, there are websites to help you find the right doctor based on your needs, like India's Practo and America's Amino. There's no need to scare yourself silly, because a cure is only a click away!

5) Stay Positive

Maybe you aren't with your family and friends. Maybe the travelling you're doing is work-related. Maybe you're someplace where there aren't any holiday celebrations. Maybe your holidays are only making you miserable. That's okay, too. Because this holiday season isn't the end - it comes with the promise of a new year, a new beginning. So stay hopeful about what lies ahead, and I promise you'll have an incredible holiday either way. :)
